Efforts are underway across the world to refresh legacy regulatory and policy structures to accommodate financial innovation and address the demands of an increasingly digital economy. Both regulators and policymakers are tasked with the difficult balancing act of fostering a conducive environment for financial technology (FinTech) development, while ensuring the end user, be it an investor or borrower, remains protected.

What does it take for governments to realise the potential of FinTech and begin to craft appropriate policy and regulatory frameworks supportive of its growth? To what extent have these efforts met with success and failure? And how has the conversation shifted in policy and regulatory circles from viewing FinTech from a risk-averse perspective, to viewing it as a tool to address certain government mandates or interests?
